Legendary British pop-rock band Duran Duran have announced their fifteenth studio album, Future Past, marking their first full-length release in six years. The album is set for release on October 22 via Tape Modern/BMG and is previewed by the atmospheric new single “Invisible.”
The announcement signals a new creative chapter for the band, whose last studio album, Paper Gods, arrived in 2015. Work on Future Past began in late 2018 after frontman Simon Le Bon initially proposed writing just a few songs for an EP before the project expanded into a full album.
A Star-Studded Album
Future Past features an impressive list of collaborators and producers. Among those contributing to the record are acclaimed producers Giorgio Moroder and Mark Ronson, as well as producer Erol Alkan. Guest musicians include Graham Coxon of Blur on guitar, pianist Mike Garson, known for his work with David Bowie, and Swedish singer Lykke Li on vocals.
The album’s standard edition contains 12 tracks, while deluxe versions add bonus material and special collectible formats, including vinyl and limited edition bundles for fans.
The Lead Single: “Invisible”
Released on May 19, 2021, “Invisible” serves as the album’s lead single and showcases the band’s signature blend of synth-pop textures and modern production. Produced by Alkan alongside the band and mixed by Mark “Spike” Stent, the song explores themes of alienation and emotional disconnect.
Bassist John Taylor described the track as evolving beyond its original concept: what began as a song about relationship struggles ultimately became a broader reflection on global uncertainty and communication breakdown.
Keyboardist Nick Rhodes highlighted the group’s sonic experimentation, saying the band focused heavily on crafting a unique “sonic architecture” that blends layered instruments into a sound unlike anything they had done before.
A Music Video Created By Artificial Intelligence
The official video for “Invisible” also pushes creative boundaries. It was created using an artificial intelligence system named Huxley, designed to interpret the song’s lyrics and emotional tone and transform them into dream-like visual imagery. The project marked one of the first collaborations of its kind between musicians and an AI visual creator.
