According to recent interviews with Alex Van Halen, the basis for this project isn’t a conventional reunion, it’s rooted in unfinished material that he and his late brother Eddie Van Halen were developing before Eddie’s passing in 2020. This kind of “connective tissue” work, deciding where solos, transitions, and vocal structures fit, is precisely why Alex said he chose Lukather, who he feels knows better than nearly anyone how to guide the material without overshadowing it.
The Vocal Challenge And Guest Choices
One of the biggest hurdles remaining is finding the right singer to complete the tracks. With drums, guitar, and bass already laid down, reportedly including contributions from Wolfgang Van Halen, Eddie’s son and former Van Halen bassist, a vocalist is needed to bring the music fully to life.
Rock legends like Paul Rodgers were approached, though Rodgers ultimately declined due to personal creative considerations. Names like Robert Plant have also been floated as possibilities, but nothing is officially confirmed.
Family And Fan Reactions
Wolfgang Van Halen has publicly expressed his support for the project, saying he is happy to help however he can, even if the specifics of his involvement haven’t been fully determined. His backing adds a meaningful connection between Van Halen’s past and present, as the band’s next chapter takes shape around the very family and friends who were part of its core.
Meanwhile, former Van Halen members Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony have stated that they were not asked to join the project, underscoring how this new album appears to be driven primarily by Alex’s vision alongside Lukather rather than a full band reunion.
