More than 10 years after their last studio album, thrash metal legends Anthrax are officially back, and they’re returning with new music that promises to hit harder than ever.
The band has announced that their brand-new single, “It’s For The Kids,” will arrive this Friday, serving as the first taste of their long-awaited 12th studio album, Cursum Perficio. The record is scheduled for release on September 18, marking Anthrax’s first full-length studio effort since 2016’s For All Kings.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, the band declared: “It’s been more than a decade… but we’re back.” The message immediately ignited excitement across the metal world, with fans celebrating the return of one of thrash metal’s legendary “Big Four” acts.
According to reports, Cursum Perficio, a Latin phrase translating roughly to “I finish the journey” or “I accomplish my course”, has been years in the making. Work on the album reportedly began as far back as 2018 before being slowed by the pandemic and extensive touring schedules. Recording sessions eventually took place at Studio 606, the famous studio owned by Foo Fighters.
Drummer Charlie Benante has described the new material as “more aggressive” and “extreme,” while guitarist Scott Ian hinted that the album pushes the band into fresh territory without abandoning the crushing riffs fans expect.
Benante recently praised the strength of the record, saying every track stands on its own. “When one song finishes and the next one comes up, it’s just like, ‘Holy shit. This one’s just as good as the last,’” he explained in a recent interview.
The upcoming album will also represent the longest gap between studio releases in Anthrax’s career, a remarkable milestone for a band that helped define the sound of American thrash metal alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer.
Anthrax’s comeback arrives during a massive touring cycle for the band. They are set to appear at several major European festivals this summer before heading out on North American dates later this year, including select shows with Iron Maiden.
For longtime fans, “It’s For The Kids” is more than just a new single, it’s the sound of Anthrax roaring back to life after a decade-long silence.
