The as-yet-untitled project, co-produced by James Slovak (brother of late guitarist Hillel Slovak), recently held a private screening at Cannes in May 2025, sparking industry buzz. According to reports, the film focuses on the deep childhood bond between Anthony Kiedis, Flea, and Hillel Slovak, while featuring interviews with current and former members of the band.

The documentary is now seeking distribution deals in New York and Los Angeles, with a festival premiere expected later this year or in early 2026.

Several social media posts have claimed the film will arrive on Netflix under the title “Funky Monks: The Red Hot Chili Peppers Story”, with rumored release dates ranging from March to September 2025. Adding to the confusion, Funky Monks is already the title of a 1991 behind-the-scenes film documenting the making of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, which is currently available on Netflix in select regions. This makes it unlikely that the new project would reuse the name.
