In the late 1970s, Eddie Van Halen wasn’t trying to reinvent rock guitar. He was simply trying to fix a problem. What came out of that problem, the legendary “Brown Sound” and the now-mythical Variac trick, ended up reshaping the sound of electric guitar and influencing generations of players.

Eddie Van Halen loved the tone of a cranked Marshall Super Lead, but there was a catch. To get that thick, warm, singing distortion, the amp had to be turned up to ear-splitting volumes, far too loud for clubs, studios, or bandmates.
Rather than switching to a smaller amp or relying on pedals, Eddie did what he always did: he experimented. He wanted the sound of a fully dimed Marshall at a more manageable level, without sacrificing feel or sustain.
That search led him to something most players wouldn’t have dared touch.
The Accident: Plugging An English-Voltage Amp Into A Variac
Marshall amps of the era were designed for UK voltage (around 240 volts). In the U.S., power runs at roughly 120 volts. Eddie began using a Variac, a variable transformer normally used by technicians, to control the voltage feeding his amp.
At first, it wasn’t about tone—it was about control.
By lowering the voltage, Eddie reduced volume while keeping the amp’s power tubes working hard. The result wasn’t thin or weak. Instead, the sound became smoother, warmer, and more elastic, with a natural compression that felt almost vocal.
That was the Brown Sound.

That feel became the backbone of Van Halen’s early recordings, especially the band’s debut album, where the guitar tone sounded unlike anything else on rock radio—bigger, richer, and alive.
A Trick That Became A Myth
The Variac trick quickly became legend. Guitarists around the world tried to copy it—often without understanding the risks. Running amps at improper voltages could destroy transformers or tubes if done carelessly.
Eddie, however, knew exactly what he was listening for. He didn’t crank the voltage up recklessly; he dialed it down to find the sweet spot where tone, sustain, and volume met.
Ironically, many players later misunderstood the trick, thinking Eddie increased voltage for more gain. In reality, the magic came from controlled reduction, not excess.
How A Mistake Became A Blueprint
What started as a workaround for a too-loud Marshall became the blueprint for modern high-gain guitar tone. Amp builders took notice. Designers began creating amplifiers that delivered saturated tone at lower volumes, essentially building the Brown Sound into the circuit.
