When people talk about the greatest rock bands of all time, Van Halen always makes the list. Behind the explosive riffs, groundbreaking guitar solos, and unforgettable stage presence was a story rooted in family, specifically, the bond between two Dutch-born brothers: Eddie and Alex Van Halen.
From Amsterdam To Pasadena
Born in the Netherlands, Alex in 1953 and Eddie in 1955, the Van Halen brothers emigrated with their family to Pasadena, California, in 1962. Their father, Jan Van Halen, was a professional musician, and the household was steeped in music.
Interestingly, Eddie first studied piano, showing early promise as a classical musician. In fact, he initially took up the drums, while Alex picked up the guitar. But when Alex demonstrated more skill on the drums, Eddie switched to guitar, and music history was forever changed.
The Birth Of Van Halen
By the early 1970s, the brothers were playing backyard parties, high school dances, and small club gigs around Pasadena. Their band went through several names, Genesis and Mammoth among them, before officially adopting the name Van Halen in 1974.
With David Lee Roth on vocals and Michael Anthony on bass, the group’s lineup solidified into the classic Van Halen that would soon dominate the rock world.
Breaking Through
In 1977, after years of relentless gigging, Van Halen landed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. Their self-titled debut album, Van Halen (1978), was an instant classic, introducing the world to Eddie’s revolutionary “tapping” guitar technique and the band’s high-energy sound.
Songs like Runnin’ with the Devil and Eruption showcased Eddie’s guitar genius, while Alex’s thunderous drumming provided the foundation. Together, their sibling chemistry gave Van Halen its unmistakable power and rhythm.
Brothers At The Core
While lead singers came and went, first Roth, then Sammy Hagar, later Gary Cherone, and eventually Roth again, the heart of Van Halen always remained Eddie and Alex. Their bond as brothers anchored the band through lineup changes, personal struggles, and the rollercoaster of fame.
Eddie often said that Alex was not just his brother, but his closest collaborator, the one person who truly understood his musical language.

With more than 80 million records sold worldwide, Van Halen is one of the most successful rock bands in history. Eddie’s passing in 2020 was a devastating loss, but the legacy he and Alex built together continues to influence generations of musicians.
