Before delivering thunderous bass lines to a packed stadium in Glasgow, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo found a different kind of rhythm, on the waves.
Ahead of the band’s highly anticipated M72 World Tour stop at Hampden Park, Trujillo made the most of his time in Scotland by visiting the Lost Shore Surf Resort near Edinburgh. The legendary bassist, a lifelong surfing enthusiast, swapped his instrument for a surfboard and enjoyed a session at Europe’s largest inland surfing destination.
Joining him in the water was Gojira drummer Mario Duplantier, whose band is opening for Metallica on the European leg of the tour. The pair embraced Scotland’s growing surf scene before returning to prepare for one of the summer’s biggest rock concerts.
Surfing: A Lifelong Passion
Long before becoming Metallica’s bassist in 2003, Trujillo was immersed in Southern California’s surf and skate culture. Surfing has remained one of his greatest passions throughout his career, even as he toured the world with Suicidal Tendencies, Ozzy Osbourne, and later Metallica.
Whenever his demanding schedule allows, Trujillo seeks out waves across the globe. Modern artificial surf parks such as Lost Shore have made it easier than ever for him to continue the hobby while traveling internationally.
The Connection Between Surfing And Music
During his visit, Trujillo spoke about the unique relationship between surfing and his music, explaining that the ocean has always fueled his creativity.
He revealed that he often developed rhythmic ideas while waiting for waves, tapping beats on his surfboard that would later influence his bass playing.
The Metallica star also shared that surfing played an unexpected role in one of the biggest moments of his career.
“Surfing and music really go hand in hand. It’s very rhythmic when you’re on the wave… I believe surfing is what brought me to Metallica.”
According to Trujillo, his shared love of surfing helped forge a friendship with Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett long before he officially joined the band, creating a bond that eventually became part of his journey into one of the world’s biggest rock acts.

Since opening in 2024, Lost Shore Surf Resort has rapidly become one of Europe’s premier surfing destinations. Located just outside Edinburgh, the state-of-the-art facility features Wavegarden Cove technology, producing consistent waves suitable for beginners, experienced surfers, and professionals alike.
The resort has attracted visitors from around the world, and Trujillo’s appearance adds another high-profile name to its growing reputation.

After trading the surfboard for his bass guitar, Trujillo rejoined Metallica as the band prepared to perform before thousands of fans at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.
While stadium concerts remain the centerpiece of the M72 World Tour, Trujillo’s visit to Lost Shore offered fans another glimpse into the lifestyle that has shaped him for decades.
