Enzo Maresca has officially begun a new chapter at Manchester City, declaring his intention to build on the football philosophy established by Pep Guardiola while hoping his latest return to the Etihad will be a permanent one.
Enzo Maresca has spoken of his excitement after being unveiled as Manchester City’s new head coach, promising to continue the club’s successful football identity following the departure of Pep Guardiola.
The Italian tactician, who has signed a three-year contract, is embarking on his third spell at the Etihad after previously managing City’s Elite Development Squad and serving as Guardiola’s assistant. His appointment marks the beginning of a new era following Guardiola’s decade-long reign that transformed City into one of Europe’s dominant clubs.
A Familiar Homecoming
Speaking in his first interview as Manchester City manager, Maresca admitted returning to the club felt special because of the strong connection he has built over the years.
“I’m very excited, very excited for many reasons,” Maresca said.
“The first one is how big the club is. This is the third time I am working here at City, hopefully it’s the last time I come back and I don’t leave anymore.”
The 46-year-old has enjoyed multiple successful spells at the club, first leading City’s Under-23 side to the Premier League 2 title before returning as Guardiola’s assistant during one of the club’s most successful periods.
Continuing Guardiola’s Legacy
Rather than attempting a complete tactical overhaul, Maresca stressed that Manchester City’s hierarchy appointed him because they want continuity in both style and philosophy.
He explained that maintaining the club’s established identity will remain his priority.
“Probably the reason why I’m here is because the idea from the club is to maintain the same style of football and the same idea,” Maresca said.
“We’re going to try to do the most important thing in football, which is to win and achieve important things. Then the day-by-day work will dictate the way I will coach.”
Having worked closely alongside Guardiola, Maresca is widely regarded as one of the Spanish manager’s closest tactical disciples, with his possession-based approach already evident during previous managerial spells.
Big Expectations Await
Maresca inherits one of the biggest jobs in world football after Guardiola’s remarkable tenure, which delivered multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups and Champions League success.
Despite the immense pressure, the Italian believes his knowledge of Manchester City’s culture, players and football structure gives him an advantage as he prepares for the new season.
Club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak praised Maresca’s understanding of City’s football philosophy, describing him as the ideal candidate to guide the next phase of the club’s evolution.
