Arsenal have reportedly been handed a significant boost in their search for defensive reinforcements after receiving encouragement in their pursuit of versatile Spanish defender Oscar Mingueza.
The 27-year-old is set to become a free agent when his contract with Celta Vigo expires at the end of June, opening the door for several European clubs to compete for his signature. Arsenal are believed to be among the frontrunners, with manager Mikel Arteta said to be a long-time admirer of the former Barcelona defender.
According to reports from Spain, Mingueza has made it clear that he intends to leave Celta Vigo this summer, effectively giving interested clubs a green light to negotiate a free-transfer move. Arsenal and Newcastle United are currently viewed as the leading contenders, although Italian giants Juventus are also monitoring the situation.
Arteta’s interest is hardly surprising. The Arsenal boss values defenders who are comfortable in multiple positions, and Mingueza fits that profile perfectly. The Spanish international can operate as a right-back, left-back, wing-back, or central defender, offering the tactical flexibility that Arteta has consistently sought during his time at the Emirates.
Arsenal’s ability to offer UEFA Champions League football could prove decisive in the race for the defender’s signature. After another successful campaign, the North London club remains an attractive destination for top talent looking to compete for major trophies, something that may give them an edge over rival suitors.
Mingueza developed through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy before making more than 60 senior appearances for the Catalan club. Since joining Celta Vigo in 2022, he has established himself as one of La Liga’s most dependable defenders, making well over 100 appearances and helping the club secure European qualification in recent seasons.
For Arsenal, a free transfer would represent smart business. While the club continues to pursue marquee signings in other areas of the squad, securing an experienced and versatile defender without paying a transfer fee would allow sporting director Andrea Berta and Arteta to allocate more resources elsewhere.
