When Foo Fighters unveiled Ilan Rubin as their new drummer in 2025, the move sparked widespread intrigue, especially given the near-simultaneous shuffle involving Nine Inch Nails. Now, Rubin himself is shedding light on how it all came together, and according to him, the story is far less dramatic than fans might think.
In a recent interview, Rubin revealed that the opportunity began with a simple, direct connection: a phone call from Dave Grohl. At the time, Rubin’s long-standing touring commitments with Nine Inch Nails were coming to a close, making his availability a key factor.
“He knew that my touring commitments were ending, and I was available,” Rubin explained, emphasizing that timing, more than anything else, opened the door to joining Foo Fighters.
A Seamless Transition, Not A “Swap”
Much of the buzz surrounding Rubin’s arrival centered on what many dubbed a “drummer swap.” Rubin exited Nine Inch Nails just as former Foo Fighters drummer Josh Freese rejoined the industrial rock outfit, a move that, on paper, looked almost too perfectly coordinated.
But Rubin insists there was no grand scheme behind the scenes.
“There is no story, honestly… it’s just a very logical thing,” he said, downplaying speculation of any behind-the-scenes maneuvering.
From his perspective, the transition made sense historically as well. Freese had previously played with Nine Inch Nails between 2005 and 2008, while Rubin had stepped into that role afterward, making the shift feel more like a natural rotation than a sudden shake-up.
Closing One Chapter, Starting Another
Rubin’s departure from Nine Inch Nails marked the end of an era. Having spent nearly 17 years with the band, he described the transition as both delicate and significant.
“It was the end of a lengthy, extensive era for me,” Rubin admitted, acknowledging the emotional weight of leaving a group that had defined much of his career.
Still, the drummer is embracing his new role with Foo Fighters, calling it an “incredible” new chapter, even if it still feels fresh months into the gig.

Joining Foo Fighters is no small task. The band, formed by Grohl in 1994, has weathered lineup changes and personal loss while maintaining its place as one of rock’s most enduring acts.
Rubin steps into a lineage that includes the late Taylor Hawkins and, more recently, Freese. But with his pedigree, ranging from Nine Inch Nails to Angels & Airwaves, he brings both technical precision and creative versatility to the role.
