Heavy metal legends Judas Priest are bringing their extraordinary five-decade story to the big screen, as the official documentary The Ballad Of Judas Priest prepares for its North American premiere at the renowned Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival in Toronto. The festival will run from April 23 to May 3, 2026, showcasing documentaries from around the world.
The film previously debuted earlier this year at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale), where it introduced audiences to an in-depth look at the band’s rise from working-class beginnings in Birmingham, England, to global heavy-metal dominance.
A Story Of Metal, Culture And Legacy
Co-directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Sam Dunn and Tom Morello, the guitarist known for his work with Rage Against The Machine, the documentary marks Morello’s directorial debut.
The film explores the band’s groundbreaking influence on heavy metal, tracing their journey across more than 50 years. Through interviews, archival footage and reflections from those close to the band, The Ballad Of Judas Priest captures how the group helped shape not only the sound of metal but also its iconic look and culture.
Frontman Rob Halford appears prominently in the documentary, including a preview clip discussing the origins of the classic 1980 anthem Breaking The Law. Halford explains that the song reflected the social unrest and frustrations of the British working class during the era of Margaret Thatcher’s government.
The Band Behind The Legend
Since forming in the early 1970s, Judas Priest has become one of heavy metal’s most influential acts. The band has sold more than 50 million records worldwide and released 19 studio albums, helping define the genre’s sound and aesthetic.
Their legacy includes timeless hits such as You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’ and recognition from the music industry’s highest institutions, including their 2022 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The group’s most recent album, Invincible Shield, released in 2024, also made history by making Judas Priest the first heavy metal band to issue studio albums 50 years apart, further cementing their enduring relevance.

Directors Dunn and Morello echoed that sentiment, explaining that while many fans know Judas Priest for their massive hits, the documentary dives deeper into the band’s history and cultural impact, highlighting how they helped shape and broaden the heavy metal community over the decades.
With its North American premiere at Hot Docs approaching, The Ballad Of Judas Priest is poised to introduce a new generation of viewers to the story of one of heavy metal’s most influential bands, celebrating a legacy that continues to inspire fans and musicians around the world.
