A wave of shock and heartbreak rippled through Longhorn Nation this morning as news broke that Texas Longhorns star running back CJ Baxter has been suspended indefinitely, sending fans reeling and casting uncertainty over the team’s upcoming season.
The University of Texas Athletics Department confirmed the suspension in a brief statement early Friday, citing “a violation of team rules” but offering no further details. Head Coach Steve Sarkisian added in a press conference that the matter is being handled internally and emphasized the program’s commitment to discipline and accountability.
“CJ is a young man with a lot of talent and potential,” Sarkisian said. “This is a difficult moment, but our focus is on helping him grow and supporting the rest of the team as we move forward.”
For fans, especially those who’ve followed Baxter since his breakout freshman season, the announcement felt like a gut punch.
“I’m absolutely heartbroken,” said Marisol Jennings, a lifelong Longhorns supporter who was seen in tears outside Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium. “CJ brought so much hope to this team. We were talking national championship, and now this? It’s devastating.”
Baxter, a former five-star recruit out of Florida, quickly emerged as a dynamic offensive weapon for the Longhorns, racking up over 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns in his sophomore campaign. His blend of speed, vision, and toughness made him a fan favorite and a projected early-round NFL Draft pick.
