When George Harrison passed away on November 29, 2001, the world lost more than a former Beatle, it lost the quiet, spiritual heart of an entire generation. Yet in his final months, even while battling cancer, George did something extraordinary.
He kept recording.

Those final recordings would become Brainwashed, an album completed after his death by his son Dhani Harrison and longtime friend and producer Jeff Lynne. And the story behind those last songs is far more powerful than any myth.

George worked on his final album for years, revisiting it between surgeries, treatments, and hospital stays. As his health declined, he focused intensely on making sure his ideas were clear, leaving detailed notes and instructions for Dhani and Jeff.

“It was like he knew he wouldn’t finish it.
But he left us every clue we needed.”
When Jeff Lynne and Dhani opened George’s tapes after his death, they found not just songs, but a father speaking directly to his son, guiding him through each unfinished moment.
The Song That Broke Dhani: “Stuck Inside A Cloud”
One recording hit Dhani harder than all the others.
“Stuck Inside a Cloud” was George’s personal favorite track on the album — and eerily, it became Dhani’s favorite too. The song’s mixture of sadness, acceptance, fear, and quiet beauty was almost too much for him to bear.
Dhani has said the first time he heard his father’s isolated vocal track, alone in the studio after George had passed, he broke down in tears.
It wasn’t just a song.

Recording Up To The End
In his final weeks, George was too ill to play guitar the way he wanted. But he still tried. He would hum parts, tap rhythms, sing little fragments, anything to get his ideas down.

He never stopped creating.”
George was determined that Dhani and Jeff would finish the work.

George’s last song, the true final track of his life, is the album’s closing piece, “Brainwashed.”
It ends with:

- And Dhani and Jeff playing the parts he left behind

Dhani later said the moment they finished the album, following George’s instructions to the letter, he finally felt a sense of peace.
“It was like he was still producing it with us.”
